I
am fascinated by the technical aspects involved in creating, so while my
current works are exploring particular ideas about the underlying structure
of organisms and matter, they are firmly rooted in the study of material in the
tradition of craft. My goal is to
create free form sculptural constructions composed of ceramic and wood, with
each material equal partners in creating the
whole. A dialogue and spatial balance
among the components emphasize the interdependence of elements and their
wholeness in the overall work.
One’s attention is subtly drawn to the points of connection
between the materials, which are points of energy. The structure appears solid, yet moving-
growing, extending, evolving and devolving in accordance with hidden binding
forces. An
expression of relationship, whether formal, emotional or physical, they
appear measured and intuitive, familiar and strange. I am presenting a variety of conflicting and
contrasting elements: alternating positive and negative spaces, growing and
decaying forms, distressed and polished surfaces. These contrasts, along with the
works’ fragility and precariousness, convey a content of anxiety,
vulnerability and persevering strength.
